Founded by a group of animal lovers in 1967 as a no-kill alternative to the city pound, Animal Haven moved to its current headquarters in 1978. A new facility in downtown Manhattan is scheduled to open in the summer of 2006.
There are about 45 dogs under Animal Haven's care at any given time. They adopt out 450 dogs a year.
Around 90 percent have been given up by their owners. The rest are strays. Fewer than 10% are purebreds. Fewer than 10% are puppies.
$120 includes shots, spaying or neutering, and microchip. If you live in the New York City, you'll be charged an $8.50 fee for a dog license.
When you arrive, you'll complete the pre-adoption form. After an interview, you'll be shown a selection of dogs the staff thinks is best suited for you. (You can also take a look at available dogs on the shelter's website, but call before you visit to make sure that a particular dog will not be out in the adoption van on that day.) If you already have a pet, or once had one, Animal Haven will ask to talk to your vet. Once your adoption is approved, Animal Haven staffers will deliver the dog to you and check that your home is safe while they're there.
You must be over 18 and be able to provide proof that dogs are allowed where you live. All members of your family, including children and dogs, should come to the shelter to meet the potential adoptee. All dogs must be neutered or spayed before they're adopted.
Animal Haven operates a mobile adoption van that travels throughout the five boroughs on weekends, and they run an adoption program at the two locations of the Biscuits & Bath doggie daycare in Manhattan. See the website for details. The shelter also runs Animal Haven Acres, a 36-acre sanctuary in the Catskills for hard to place dogs.
