There is no central shelter. Stray From the Heart's dogs live in foster homes.

Stray from the Heart was founded in September 2000 by three New York City animal lovers and rescuers: Barbara Fox, a businesswoman; Beth Silberg, a dog trainer; and Toni Bodon, an attorney. Without any paid employees or even a shelter, Stray from the Heart has so far rescued over 1,000 abandoned and abused dogs by using a network of volunteers (including dog walkers, trainers, and foster parents) to first rehabilitate and socialize the dogs and then find them permanent homes.

Around 50 dogs are available for adoption at any given time.

Many are strays found in all the boroughs of New York City. Some are taken from abusive owners. Others are surrendered by their owners who can no longer care for a pet.

$185 gets you a dog who’s spayed or neutered and fully vaccinated.

To see dogs available for adoption, visit Stray From the Heart's website. Fill out an adoption form, and someone from SFTH will call you to set up an appointment. You will need to provide an i.d. that certifies that you are over 21, and shows your current address, as well as two references. Someone from SFTH will make a home visit before and after the adoption.

You’ll will be asked to sign an adoption agreement stating that you intend to keep the dog as an indoor house pet, treat the dog with love, and provide food, water, and proper veterinary care. As well, you must agree that if you want or need to give up the dog you will return him to Stray from the Heart (like most shelters and rescue groups, Stray from the Heart has a "no questions asked" policy when owners return dogs).
