Herbs and Bach Flower Remedies
Herbalists use plants for medicinal purposes. Various plants are believed to help heal and balance the mind as well as the body. There are many different branches of herbal medicine, such as Aryuvedic (from India), North American, and Chinese (often paired with acupuncture). Veterinary herbalists may draw from one or more of these approaches. Bach flower remedies focus on healing the emotions (a balanced mental state is believed to help the animal restore itself to physical health). Edward Bach was a British physician who in the early 1900s developed a theory that disease is caused by negative emotional states such as sadness, fear, and impatience.

One of the best-known Bach flower mixtures is Rescue Remedy, a combination of five flower extracts that is said to fortify the emotions against physical and mental emergencies. Other flower remedies are recommended for dogs suffering grief over the loss of a companion or stress from being kenneled. More about Bach flower remedies can be found on Dr. Allen Schoen's website.

For a list of veterinarians who use Bach flower remedies, Chinese herbs, and Western herbs, got to the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association's directory.
