Lead and Zinc
Lead poisoning is a threat to animals as well as to children. Dogs will sometimes eat paint chips or chew on painted woodwork or linoleum. The main sources of zinc poisoning are post-1982 pennies, which are 97 percent zinc; some screws and bolts, including those used in some old pet carriers; and zinc oxide ointment. Some puppies will play with and chew on coins and other metal objects, so be sure to keep such things out of reach. Symptoms can include GI signs (vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain), anemia, or neurologic signs (depression, blindness, circling, shaking). Treatment involves finding and removing the source of exposure and giving supportive care.
