Massage and Physical Therapy
Various forms of healing touch, physical therapy, hydrotherapy, and massage are practiced on dogs. They can be particularly helpful for rehabilitation from broken bones and other injuries; after back, hip, or knee surgery; and for arthritis. Many people practicing these therapies on dogs began as human physical therapists and then crossed over to working with animals. For referrals to animal physical therapists, talk to your vet or a veterinary surgeon.

Two popular forms of what might be called "alternative massage" are Reiki and Tellington-Touch. Reiki comes from the Japanese words for Universal Life Force. Practitioners use their hands and energy to unblock the flow of ki, or chi, much like in acupuncture. This is believed to speed healing and increase a dog's energy and sense of well-being. The American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association's website lists members who practice Reiki as well as other alternative-medicine therapies. More about Reiki in animals can be found at this practitioner's website.

Tellington-Touch was developed specifically for animals by Linda Tellington-Jones. Her website describes her methods, which are said to be effective for behavioral problems such as fearfulness and aggression as well as physical conditions such as wound healing and nerve damage. The website also sells her books and lists Tellington-Touch practitioners.
