Established in 1990, this was the first dog run in New York City. Some people complain that Tompkins attracts too many aggressive dogs, but everyone agrees that the run has one of the tightest communities of dog owners. Every six weeks volunteers gather for an Official Chip Day, when the run is cleaned and the ground cover is refreshed. The run features separate areas for large and small dogs, benches and picnic tables, water, and a memorial to dogs who have passed on. The Tompkins run hosts an annual Halloween party for dogs, costumes and all. A campaign is on to raise $65,000 for a major renovation. To contribute, and for more information, visit the run's website at www.firstrunfriends.org.
