We spoke to dog owners, read guide books, searched the Internet, took trips out of the city, and made dozens of phone calls. The result is the following list of some suggested Hound Getaways.

Warning: If you don't own or rent a car, it's almost impossible to get out of town with a dog over 20 pounds. Amtrak forbids all dogs, except service dogs. The Long Island Railroad allows small dogs in a bag or a kennel. But big dogs are only allowed on the LIRR if the conductor decides to overlook the rule (which, according to our sources, is not often). If the conductor does let you on, your dog must be muzzled. The Metro North Railway allows well-behaved dogs on a tight leash; though, again, the conductor can refuse to let you on. As for the New York City Subway, apart from guide dogs, only dogs that are tucked away in a bag can be passengers.
