| bear mountain harriman state park (lake tiorati area) |
| It's so close to the city and feels far away.
You can hear the wind through the evergreens. It's huge; with
so many trails, you'll always discover something new.

| 90 minutes or so by car. |
| By car. Exit from NY Interstate 87 North, take the
Sloatsburg exit; follow Route 17 north and turn right on to Seven
Lakes Drive. Several miles past the visitors station, at a traffic
circle, is the Tiorati parking lot.
| A break from concrete. Open space. Illicit swimming
(find the Sebago Boat Launch, which is on Seven Lakes Drive).
| More than 50,000 acres. We recommend the challenging
hiking path that starts just above the parking area. Follow the paved
road to the top of the hill and turn left. From there, follow the
trail signs (little white circles with red dots and white bars). The
path ascends sharply. Masses of rhododendron appear. We're not sure
if the trail ever ends: we were beat before we made it that far. Note:
To make the most of your trip, buy a map (available from the NY/NJ
Trail Conference at www.nynjtc.com).
