prospect park
There is no fenced-in dog run in Prospect Park. There doesn't need to be: when it comes to dogs, this is the most enlightened park in the City. Prospect Park's off-leash rules are liberal. There are as many dog fountains as there are human fountains. There is a wonderful dog beach (enter the Park at 9th Street and follow the path that passes the Tennis House and goes to the Pools). And between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. on the first Saturday of every month (rain or shine) a "Coffee Bark" is held in the Long Meadow, behind the Picnic House (enter the park at PPW and 4th Street, go left around Picnic House). Coffee, Dizzy's muffins and dog biscuits are served. Coffee Bark is sponsored by the Fellowship for the Interests of Dogs and their Owners (FIDO), a group of dog-owners dedicated to promoting off-leash activity at Prospect Park (for more information about FIDO, visit www.fidobrooklyn.com).

These are the main rules at Prospect Park: (1) In winter (November 1 through March 31), dogs must be on leash between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. In summer (April 1 through October 31), dogs must be on leash between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.; (2) At all other times dogs may be off leash only in the Long Meadow, the Nethermead, and the Peninsula Meadow; (3) On weekdays during winter and summer, dogs may be off leash in the Nethermead after 5 p.m.; (4) Dogs are not allowed in playgrounds; (5) Dogs are not allowed on the bridle paths; (6) Dogs are not allowed on ball fields when games are in progress. Note: The Parks Department has recently changed its leash policy. The new rules would mean reduced off-leash hours in Prospect Park: before 9 a.m. and after 9 p.m. year round. Things are still in flux. To be safe, you may want to leash your dog between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m., at least for the time being.
