west village
washington square dog run
location
West 4th Street at Thompson Street
comments
One of the best known dog runs in the city, in one of the most popular parks. On weekends it gets so crowded, you can lose your dog in the crowd. That said, the Washington Square Dog Run Association is one of the city's most active, maintaining the run solely through their own volunteer and fund-raising efforts. Thanks to the group, the run was recently resurfaced and drainage and a dog bath were installed. Also, a run just for small dogs was opened nearby. To the distress of those who worked so hard to bring about these improvements, rumors are now circulating that as part of the planned renovations of the park beginning in the summer of 2005, the run will be moved. You can reach the Washington Square Dog Run Association at 212-560-4345 or info@washsqdogrun.org.

Thanks to a West Village urbanhounder for letting us know about this run. He tells us that it's a fairly small, cement space with a water fountain for people and dogs, very good fencing and double gates, a spectacular view and a freaking freezing wind off the Hudson. Be cautious at it gets slippery here in wet weather.
