Evoking a different time and place, Merrill paints dignified-looking dogs against such backgrounds as manor homes, rolling pastures, and wide blue skies punctuated by fluffy clouds. You can easily imagine these oils framed in gold and hung above the mantelpiece. Still, while Merrill is perhaps the most traditional of living dog portraitists, her portraits aren't stiff; her dogs exude warmth and majesty. |
