Jim Dratfield, Petography
Medium: Photography: sepia-tone, black-and-white, color, or hand-tinted.
Style: Dratfield works in a classical fine art style. His elegant portraits typically show dogs posed on chairs or sofas. Dratfield often shoots children and pets together, and manages to capture their bond with warmth and humor without being sappy or patronizing. When he is not shooting in homes, Dratfield uses bright flowers or foliage as a backdrop. Apart from traditional prints, Dratfield can turn your dog's portrait into note cards, bound book covers, and even jewelry.
Best known for: Dratfield has shot portraits of the pets of such luminaries as Jennifer Aniston, Henry Kissinger, and Oscar de La Renta. His books include Pug Shots (Studio, 1999) Underdogs (Clarkson Potter, 2002) Day of the Dachshund (Clarkson Potter, 2004) and A Dog for All Seasons (Clarkson Potter, 2006).
Location: Based in New York City, Dratfield shoots subjects in the Tri-State area and travels frequently to Texas, California, Florida, and Washington D.C. He accepts commissions all over the country.
Cost: $1,000 covers a two-to-three-hour photo session in New York City and three matted prints (one 8" x 10" and two 5" x 7") of three different images. As well, you get a choice of either a dozen note cards or a 4" x 6" print in a burled wood frame. Prices outside New York City start at $1,100, plus travel expenses. If six or more jobs can be arranged in a particular city, Dratfield will cover his own expenses.
Production Time: Proofs will arrive ten days after the shoot, and the final portrait will be ready four to six weeks after you order it.
