Question:

"How can I remove pine sap from my dog's fur without harming his skin or cutting the fur?"

Answer:
Take some salad oil (canola, corn, olive—whatever you’ve got) and massage it thoroughly into the pine sap, breaking up the sap with your fingers as much as possible. Gently pull and work the sap out of the hair as it softens. Keep at it until you feel that most of the pine sap is gone. Then bathe your dog using dog shampoo to get the oil and remaining residue out of his coat.

Salad oil is also good for removing other sticky substances, such as tar, chewing gum, and some kinds of paint. Peanut butter (the oily kind, not the low-fat version) also works if you don’t have any salad oil in the house. Never use paint thinner, turpentine, nail-polish remover, or other solvents on an animal—they are absorbed through the skin and can cause chemical burns and poisoning.
