In late April 2000, in response to complaints from residents of a nearby building, this dog run was abruptly shut down by the Parks Department. The nearby building's residents have long demanded that the dog run be moved to a more desolate area. They've complained that the run is noisy and that it attracts drug dealers and vandals. The West Harlem Dog Runners Club has countered that to be safe to dog owners, the dog run must be in a well-populated area. Round One, it seems, has been won by the building's residents. Now the Dog Runners Club is desperately trying to work with the Community Board and the Parks Department to find an alternative. If you'd like to get involved, contact Jim Dowell, president of the Riverside Park Fund, at 212-870-3070.

This large run is pleasantly woody and shaded. Its active community of members meet regularly to clean and maintain it and even change the wood chip surface every few months. There is a separate section for small dogs. The first Saturday of every month the run holds a breakfast coffee bark gathering. For more information, visit the park's blog or write dogpark@stnicholaspark.org.

It took three years of dog owner activism to get a run established in this lovely historic park.

This small run opened in March 2000. It's bare-bones and a little noisy (it's right next to the FDR Drive), but as it's the only dog run in East Harlem, there's a lot here to be thankful for.
