It took nearly two years and $80,000, but it was worth it: the reconstruction of this dog run has made it a model for the rest of the city. It's evidence of what can be done when the Parks Department, local government, dog owners and other members of the community cooperate. The run has World Fair-style benches, a elegant wrought-iron fence and a water fountain. The run's surface—soft crushed granite—is easy to clean and maintain. And it's soft on dogs' paws. In summer months, there a dog-friendly outdoor café right across the promenade from this run. Visit the newsgroup at groups.yahoo.com/group/RiversideParkDogs

Organized fund-raising by the community resulted in a renovation that enlarged the run, provided much-needed drainage, a new fence and lots of nice features, including a spacious separate area for dogs who are small or antisocial. Also, there's a fountain plus a 100-foot hose and spray gun for keeping dogs cool in the dog days of summer. Visit the newsgroup at groups.yahoo.com/group/RiversideParkDogs

After an over nine year effort by Friends and Lovers of Riverside Area Life (FLORAL), a local dog owners group, the once-temporary, now permanent and renovated 72nd street run celebrated its grand opening in the fall of 2004. It features a state of the art drainage system, wrap-around tree benches, and a river view. For more information, visit FLORAL's website at www.rspfloral.org.

After a major renovation, this dog run in the shadow of the Museum of Natural History receives rave reviews. It's got water faucets for dogs, a water fountain for humans, many benches, a separate run for small dogs, and shade from the park's great trees.
