NewsHound 030
June 3, 2005
Dear urbanhounders,

The start of summer means LOTS of events around the city for dogs and their humans, and this issue of NewsHound (our first full-color edition of NewsHound!) will help you to make the most of them.

Hungry for more? Go directly to urbanhound.com itself where we just launched an all-new version of Hound Talk,, the ultimate message board for dog people of all stripes and colors to share information, exchange news, and connect. Please visit Hound Talk, post a message or two, spread the word, and let us know what you think.

Urbanhound.com is all about this city’s extraordinary community of dogs and their humans; that’s why we can't contain our pride that our very own hometown institution, Tompkins Square Park's First Run Dog Run, was just named the fourth best dog run in the entire country by Dog Fancy magazine. It's a real tribute to the strong community at the run, which is, not surprisingly, much smaller and more modest than the other winners. Congratulations!

With best hot-weather wishes to you and your hounds, yours,

Nina Munk & Nadia Zonis

Hound News
New Yorkers for Humane Housing, a grassroots organization started by a Brooklyn-based urbanhounder, is sponsoring a petition drive to get an initiative on the ballot in November to eliminate the no-pets clause in New York City leases. Learn more about their effort.

Planning on flying with your dog this summer? If so, you'll soon have a bit more information to help decide which airlines to avoid. Starting June 15, thanks to the passage of the Safe Air Travel For Animals Act, airlines will be required to report exactly how often pets in their care are lost, injured, or killed. Until now, dogs hurt in transport were simply reported as "lost luggage." The stats will be posted on the DOT's Aviation Consumer Protection website.

Manhattan's Washington Square Park is about to undergo a $16 million renovation, as approved by New York's Landmarks Preservation Commission. Phase I of the project begins this summer. Phase II, which will include moving the dog run to the Southern edge of the Park, happens later on. Details are still vague, but local dog people are anxious at the thought of anything disturbing their beloved dog run. For more information, contact the Washington Square Dog Run Association at 212-560-4345 or info@washsqdogrun.org. The group also has a newsgroup.
