Dear urbanhounders,

The overhaul of the urbanhound.com continues. If you've missed the many changes and updates and improvements, stop by and take a look. Our guide to pet insurance plans is all new. Our Hound Talk message board is too. So are our collection of Great Hound Getaways, our our favorite canine swimming spots, our Guide To Air Travel, and our comprehensive list of the city's dog runs.

Now: on to finding relief from the hot weather. If you live anywhere near Manhattan's Battery Park, we highly recommend a visit to the neighborhood's elegant new dog run, at Kowsky Plaza. This gorgeous spot should be a model for all dog runs: it includes a wading pool for hounds, plenty of shaded wooden benches for humans, and a marvelous view.

With best summer wishes to you and your hounds, yours,

Nina Munk & Nadia Zonis

»  Flying with dogs is a bigger hassle than ever. One airline (Continental) refuses to transport American Pit Bull Terriers. Another (US Airways) won't take dogs wearing muzzles. As for Southwest, it won't take your dog no matter what. To help you find your way through the maze of airline rules and regulations, urbanhound.com has gathered all the details in one comprehensive Guide to Air Travel.

»  If you'd like to get away with your dog, but traveling by air is too big a headache, we've got some nice ideas for you. Our collection of Ways to Escape The Cityincludes a day trip to Bear Mountain, a weekend getaway to the Adirondacks, and other suggestions.

»  Does your dog love the water? If so, be sure to consult our guide to New York City's Great Canine Swimming Spots.

Hound News
If you're looking for something to readwhile your hound socializes at the dog run, we can't think of a better choice than the hot-off-the-presses Unleashed: The Dog Runs of New York City by Frances R. Sheridan (Prestel Publishing). The book is a practical guide to the dog runs of all five boroughs, including descriptions, ratings, and helpful maps. It's also filled with Sheridan's photos of dogs enjoying the runs.

Help fund low-cost spay and neuter programs with a vanity plate. The Department of Motor Vehicles has introduced a license plate, Our Best Friends, designed by Peter Max, to help support the Animal Population Control Fund. Order the plates at 518-402-4838 or online from the New York State DMV and $20 of your registration fee will go toward subsidizing spay and neuter clinics.

You don't need a website to tell you that hot and humid weather is hard on dogs. Even so, weather.com's new PetCast feature is probably worth a bookmark. Along with standard weather info, it gives you a Dog Comfort Index based on your dog's personal characteristics (hint: being overweight is not good), and a rating of mosquito activity.

For some reason, July is a big month for hound-art-related contests. If you have a great picture that "celebrate the priceless bond between humans and their animal companions," consider entering the American Humane Association 2005 Pets & Pals Contest. Two winners will receive $1,000 each. The deadline is July 29. If you have a photogenic Labrador Retriever (and whose Lab isn't photogenic?), enter the Ninth Annual Labrador Retriever Photo Contest to benefit the non-profit Long Island Labrador Retriever Rescue. Winning photos will be featured in the group's 2006 calendar. Entries cost $5 per photo, and the deadline is July 15.

If your preferred medium is painting or drawing, there's the third annual AKC/Eukanuba National Championship Commemorative Poster Competition. Images that depicts "The Wonderful World of Purebred Dogs" will be considered. Deadline for submissions is October 31. The grand prizewinner will receive $1,000 and a trip to Tampa for the Championship.
