NewsHound 035
October 21, 2005
Dear urbanhounders,

Maybe it was last month, when a Starbucks opened on Manhattan's Lower East Side. Or maybe it was years earlier, in 1997, when Hooters arrived in midtown. We're not sure when exactly New York City started to look like the rest of the country, but we do know that once a year, at least, we still put on a marvelously off-beat show that is all our own: Halloween.

It's a proudly idiosyncratic NYC tradition, dressing up our dogs in the most creative, outlandish, or frightfully cute Halloween costumes---and no one pulls it off with as much style as New Yorkers. So this year, urbanhound.com decided to devote a special edition of NewsHound entirely to Halloween.

From Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx to the Narrows Botanical Gardens in Brooklyn, there are, by our count, 21 great Halloween events (beginning tomorrow) just for dogs. We hope to see you and your hounds---masked, cloaked, bewigged or bejeweled---parading in honor of the holiday.

With best trick or treat wishes to you and your hounds,
yours,
Nina Munk & Nadia Zonis

Hound Halloween Happenings
Pom Halloween Party
Saturday, October 22, noon
Washington Square Dog Run, W. 4th St. at Thompson St., Manhattan
This may raise the hackles of Pug people, but in our view, the most adorable breed in a Halloween costume is a Pomeranian. At this event, costumes (for dogs) are mandatory, and an RSVP to the New York City Pomeranian Meetup Group is requested.
