Dear urbanhounders,

Happy Year of the Dog! Urbanhounders will not be surprised to hear that people born under the Chinese Zodiac's years of the dog (1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, and 2006) share many fine characteristics: they're loyal, honest, and trustworthy. Of course, they are also known to be stubborn and selfish.

This year's two-week celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year begins on January 29th, with various events in Manhattan's Chinatown, our favorite being a great parade that includes dogs in costume (for details, scroll down to events). To outfit your hound for the occasion, visit Pearl of the Orient (36 Mott St.) for traditional Chinese silk cheongsams for dogs, or Peony Red (217 Centre St.) for a $78 Chinese pet carrier.

Speaking of well-dressed dogs, have you seen our all-new 2006 Urbanhound Guide to the Best Hound Shops? We've awarded top marks in ten categories, from "Best Alternative Pet Supply Store" to "Best Store for Spoiled Rotten Pets." Let us know if we overlooked your favorite store.

Finally, February in New York means the Westminster Dog Show. Many terrific dog events take place when Westminster is in town, not only the show itself; so read on for details, and for tips on avoiding the crowds.

With best wishes to you and your hounds,
Nina Munk & Nadia Zonis

»  With the number of wolf pups in Yellowstone National Park having dropped sharply in the past year, biologists suspect the culprit is the deadly canine parvovirus. News of parvo in Yellowstone, reported in a January 15 New York Times article, reminded us of just how terrifying parvo is, and how important the parvo vaccination is for all dogs. Get the full scoop on parvo, including symptoms and treatments, from urbanhound's own Dr. Betsy Brevitz.

»  If you're on the lookout for a groomer, dog walker, pet taxi, or just about any kind of service for your dog, a quick search of our Services & Supplies Directory can help.

»  Separation anxiety is one of the most frustrating behaviors in dogs. Here, from urbanhound's Andrea Arden, are tips to help your anxious dog to cope. 7th Annual Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade & Festival

The fantastic parade---which starts at Chinatown's Mott and Canal Streets, proceeds down Bowery, and winds its way through practically every street in Chinatown before ending at Worth Street---celebrates the Lunar New Year with ornate floats, marchers disguised as gorgeous dragons and lions, acrobats, musicians, and dancers in elaborate Chinese costumes. This year, in honor of the Year of the Dog, several hundred dogs from various local rescue organizations will march wearing traditional Chinese Lunar New Year costumes. As many as 100 of these dogs will be up for adoption (the ones wearing the 'Adopt Me" vests...). Though the parade is especially dog-friendly this year, we don't recommend you bring your dog, unless he or she has no trouble dealing with crowds that are expected to swell to 350,000. For more information about the event, consult Explore Chinatown's website.

Westminster Dog Show
Monday, February 13 and Tuesday, February 14, 8:30 AM to 6 PM
Madison Square Garden, 7th Ave. and 32nd St., Manhattan
Unless you're serious about dog shows, it's easier to just tune in to USA Network (at 8pm on February 13 and 14) than to actually make an appearance at Westminster. Still, we always have a good time wandering around backstage at this grand show, where anyone with a general admittance ticket can check out hundreds of dogs (and their handlers) as they anxiously await their turn in the ring. Hanging out backstage offers a completely different perspective than hanging on your sofa watching USA Network: depending on when you show up backstage, breeders and handlers will answer questions about their breeds, let you watch while they primp and preen their dogs, and generally offer a rare view of life on the often-stressful show-dog circuit. Word of warning: Westminster gets more and more crowded every year, so, if possible, try to arrive first-thing Monday before the participants get cranky and the crowds overwhelming. For more information, including details on tickets and which breeds will be in the ring when, visit the Wesminster website.

Advance viewings, which are open to the public, are on Saturday, February 11 (10 AM to 5 PM); Sunday, February 12 (noon to 5 PM); and Monday, February 13 (10 AM to 6 PM). See above (February 12) for information about a special preview event that benefits DOGNY. See below for information about the competing Doyle's auction, which is scheduled so you can rush straight from one auction to the next without missing a beat (or a lot).

Hound News
Dogs are still being poisoned by toxic food manufactured by Diamond Pet Food. The problem was discovered in early December, but still not everyone has heard the news. For the exact lot numbers of the Diamond, Country Value, and Professional brands of the affected food, along with lots of other helpful information, visit the Diamond recall website. Latest updates on the disaster can be found at the Cornell College of Veterinary medicine, which recommends that any dog that may have eaten affected lots of the food, even a dog showing no symptoms, should be checked by a vet for possible liver failure.

A neighborhood dog owners' co-op has been formed in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. It's a great idea: we wish we had thought of it! Members share such duties as dog walking and pet sitting. To learn more and sign on, visit the Prospect Place Dog Owners' Co-op website.
