Dear urbanhounders,

Last week, Barkis, a 70-pound collie-chow mix from Park Slope, was killed by stray voltage that surged from a sidewalk in his neighborhood. Meanwhile, in Queens, the search continues for Ch. Bohem C'est la Vie, the fragile champion whippet known as Vivi, who bolted while being boarded onto a Delta flight at Kennedy Airport. Only a few days before Vivi disappeared, a 28-year-old Brooklyn man was arrested for posing as a vet, but not before he almost killed a Boston terrier during a botched surgery.

Remember how the month began? With news of a Colombian drug ring that surgically implanted bags of liquid heroin in the bellies of labrador puppies destined for New York.

Is it time to move to the suburbs? Gulp. For the moment, these dogs in peril have us wanting to do something, anything, to help. After all, it's been two years since stray voltage killed Jodie Lane as she walked her dogs, yet Con Edison still can't make our streets safe for humans or hounds. First: we're going to sign this petition, organized by urbanhounder Robin Silvestri.

Maybe now too is the time to support the ASPCA, which does a remarkable job of lobbying for and preventing cruelty to animals. To learn of pending legislation specific to New York, go to this page on the ASPCA website.

Got another dog-advocacy organization you think we should support and promote? Let us know before we move to Connecticut.

With best wishes to you and your hounds,
Nina Munk & Nadia Zonis

Are Greenies dangerous? Driven by the rallying cry of a New York couple whose miniature dachshund, Burt, died after his intestines were obstructed by a Greenie, and, most recently, by a frightening news report that aired on CNN last week, urbanhounders are wondering whether to ween their dogs off the hugely popular dog treat. We look forward to hearing from an unbiassed veterinary organization on this one, but for now, to make an informed decision, go to the links above (CNN and the blog started by Burt's owners, who have filed a $5 million lawsuit against the makers of Greenies) and visit the manufacturer's online defense.

People with dogs walk more than people without dogs, declares a study published in the February issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. The study of 350 Canadians found that those with dogs walked an average of 300 minutes a week, while the dogless walked just 168 minutes. The study's authors suggest: "Acquiring a dog should be explored as an intervention to get people more physically active." Then again: the study also showed that, with the exception of walking, dog people did less of all other forms of exercise than non-dog people.

Unlike some other states, New York has no official state dog. State Assemblyman Vincent Ignizio (R-S.I.) hopes to change that. He's introduced legislation that would name the German shepherd the official dog of the Empire State. Why the shepherd? Because of the heroism displayed by the breed on 9/11.
