Dear urbanhounders,

What is it about spring that has us daydreaming of getting a(nother) dog? Is it the renewal of the season? The daffodils? The idea of strolling under shading trees in Central Park?

Whatever it is, if you too are dreaming dogs, urbanhound's famous Breed Finder can help nail down the kinds of dogs best suited for your home--whether you want a pure-bred or mixed-breed. To learn about the nation's most sought-after breeds, visit our 50 Most Popular list.

Ready to take the plunge? We've just updated Adopt a Hound, our exhaustive guide to each of the city's top animal shelters and rescue groups.

There's more: for advice from other urbanhounders, visit our Hound Talk message boards, specifically the Getting a Dog category. One recent thread warns against a breeder who's jilted urbanhounders. Another informative thread, devoted to American Kennels, a well-known pet shop near Bloomingdale's, makes the perfect case for why you should not buy dogs from American Kennels (or other pet shops).

Happy hound hunting, yours,
Nina Munk & Nadia Zonis

Another article describes what genetic defects are revealed by a CERF report .

On urbanhound.com's The Trainer Is In pages, Andrea Arden offers advice on how to hush your hound, with answers to such questions as: How do I stop my dog from barking when she's alone?; What's the best way to prevent dogs from barking at every noise?; and Can I teach my dog to shush on command?.

Support a bill to allow municipalities to ban trapping. A few months ago, a pet dog was killed by a hunting trap while walking with his human on a hiking path near Sag Harbor. That's one reason why many dog people are trying to win passage of Assembly Bill A1853 which would allow New York State municipalities to ban animal traps. To add your support, contact the chair of the state's Environmental Conservation Committee, Assembly Member Thomas DiNapoli, at 516-455-5192 and your own Assembly member (you can find out who that is here) to let them know you support the bill. For more information, download the brochure on trapping from the League of Humane Voters of New York City.
