Dear urbanhounders,
The New York City dog's most cherished privilege is the Parks Department's unofficial (and longstanding) policy of allowing dogs to run off leash between 9 PM and 9 AM. Now that privilege is under attack by the shrill Juniper Park Civic Association (JPCA) of Queens, which, despite its benign name, is notoriously anti-hound.
Back in 1999, the JPCA declared that New Yorkers were being "terrorized by off-leash dogs." More recently, the JPCA's taken its crusade to the courts, demanding the end of glorious off-leash socials in Central Park, Prospect Park, Juniper Park, and every other park in the city.
We don't think this lawsuit stands a chance (already, a judge has said it lacks reason). Nevertheless, the JPCA's rabid attacks have us on tenterhooks. We urge all urbanhounders to defend off-leash recreation by reminding those in power that we are law-abiding citizens, taxpayers, and devoted members of our community.
What can you do? Sign and circulate this petition. Write to Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum, and your City Council person. Be sure to support our city's top dog-advocacy organizations, including Central Park PAWS, FIDO in Prospect Park, and (by emailing Terri.Sullivan@ny.ddb.com) the newly formed Juniper Valley Dog Association.
With best revolutionary wishes to you and your hounds,
Nina Munk & Nadia Zonis

» Do you live in a neighborhood with no (legal) off-leash recreation areas? Then why not start a dog run? Consult urbanhound.com for the definitive step-by-step guide to starting a dog run in New York City.
» As the weather warms, you and your dog may just make it out of the city and to the hiking trails. But be warned: do not let your dog slurp from any streams. As urbanhound's resident vet, Dr. Betsy Brevetz, explains here, even seemingly clean water can cause harm.
» "Heartgard or Interceptor?" That's the question one urbanhounder asks on our message boards. The answer is found in urbanhound's Hound Health, where Dr. Betsy Brevitz describes the difference between all the big heartworm preventatives (Heartgard, Interceptor, and Revolution). |

The city pound has a bad rap. For one thing, people tend to think the only dogs found at the pound are big, tough and hard to handle. In fact, there are many dainty dogs up for adoption at Animal Care & Control of New York City. We spotted: Dukey, a Miniature Pinscher-Chihuaha mix (A656225); Susie, a Brussells Griffon-Border Terrier mix (A655463); Mr. Fuji, a Brussells Griffon-Border Terrier mix (A655562); and Sparky, a Cocker Spaniel (A654891). They're all looking for homes right now. Interested? Call Animal Care & Control of New York City at 212-788-4000 and use the reference numbers above (sadly, the website's search engine doesn't work all that well...).
