NewsHound 044 July 27, 2006 |
Dear urbanhounders,
Outsiders believe that anyone with a dog in New York City must be crazy. But we know better. And so we dedicate this issue to the top 10 things that make New York City great (for dogs):
10. The boom in local Meetup groups for breed enthusiasts;
9. Blogs like NYCityPets and NYCgadgetgirl's Snick the Dog that chronicle a dog's life in the Big Apple;
8. Hound-friendly stores like Bottlerocket, a wine merchant in the Flatiron District that embraces dogs;
7. Prospect Park's beloved dog beach;
6. Dog fountains in Central Park (five so far, with more to come);
5. Animal Friendly NYC, a local PAC that tracks politicians' support for animal issues;
4. The Parks Department's recent pledge of $100,000 to overhaul Tompkins Square Park's First Run;
3. Last week's outpouring of donations ($10,300 in three days) in response to threatened cutbacks at the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals;
2. A growing support for dog runs throughout the city, such as the one approved last month in Sunnyside, Queens;
1. This city's remarkable number of events devoted to D O G S (and the fact that NewsHound tells you all about them).
Yours, with best sweltering wishes to you and your hounds,
Nadia Zonis

The lawsuit challenging off-leash privileges in city parks has still not gone away. On June 27, a judge advised the anti-hound Juniper Park Civic Association and the Parks Department to reach a compromise before a hearing on August 29. (For details on the Civic Association's lawsuit calling for an end to off-leash hours, see May's NewsHound.) If you haven't already done so, help defend off-leash recreation by printing and distributing this petition (or sign an online version) and calling 311 to express your support for the Parks Department policy.
