Dear urbanhounders,
For the past few months, we have kept you abreast of the status of the lawsuit that seeks to end our parks' cherished off-leash hours. We regret to report that the suit continues to move forward, and the outlook for urbanhounders is not good. The tireless advocates at The New York Council of Dog Owner Groups tell us that even while the Parks Department is eager to maintain the city's informal off-leash policy, the law as written isn't on our side. Our best hope, then, is for us to make enough noise---to show just how powerful a block the dog community is---so the city will appeal any decision that threatens off-leash hours.
We urge you to make your voice heard, by signing and circulating this petition, and this one, and, heck, this one too. As well, be sure to email Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum, and your City Council person. Also, get involved with your local dog-advocacy organizations. If you live near Juniper Park in Queens where the lawsuit got started, email Terri.Sullivan@ny.ddb.com to join the newly formed Juniper Valley Dog Association.
Another pressing local issue is the distressing number of dogs in the city's animal shelters. Starting next month, in cooperation with Animal Care & Control, urbanhound will send out weekly emails introducing you to an adoptable hound. We hope you'll give us these dogs in need a helping hand by forwarding the "Homeless Hound of the Week" emails to any aspiring dog guardians you know.
On a more positive note, scroll down for a long list of lots and lots of great canine events.
With best end-of-summer wishes to you and your hounds,
Nadia Zonis

Humane Society offers aid to China's dogs. In the wake of the destruction of more than 50,000 dogs—clubbed to death to stop the spread of rabies, which has killed 16 people in China in the past eight months—the Humane Society of America has offered $100,000 to help China set up a nationwide rabies vaccination program. By emailing and calling China's ambassador to the U.S., you can help improve the lot of China's dogs.
Subway Petition. A group of New Yorkers who would like to be able to take their well-behaved medium-sized or large dogs on the subway have started a petition drive. A PDF copy of the petition to sign and distribute can be downloaded here or, you can sign an online version, though the organizers contend that paper and ink are more likely to get the attention of the MTA.
Got a little extra time and energy on your hands? Sign on to Animal Care & Control's new dog walking program.
