NewsHound 046 September 15, 2006 |
Dear urbanhounders,
September is the kindest month for dogs. The weather's perfect for strolling, and there are few things our hounds like more than racing (off leash) through leaves. Even better, this month ushers in the season for fabulous canine events.
All over town, beginning now, dogs are being celebrated with parties, parades, exhibits, fundraisers, gatherings, blessings, and more. Our listings below include: a dog parade to honor poet and dog enthusiast Dorothy Parker; Dog Day at Shea Stadium; and the marvelous BARC Dog Show & Parade in Williamsburg (this year's theme is Pups in Space).
In fact, NYC hound events have become so numerous that we've split NewsHound in two; we'll now be coming to you every two weeks with the latest news on what's happening where and when. For last-minute planning, visit urbanhound's homepage where we now list local events.
Speaking of changes, we hope you noticed (and passed along) the "Help a Hound" email we sent earlier this week. By partnering with the city's Animal Care & Control, and with your help, we're determined to find homes for dogs in need.
With best autumnal wishes, yours,
Nadia Zonis

Vets will offer free advice. And some two dozen different AKC-recognized breeds will be represented at the event, including less-well-known breeds such as the Löwchen and the Clumber Spaniel. Off-leash privileges in city parks are preserved, for now. To stay on top of the latest developments in the Juniper Park lawsuit, visit the brand new website www.nycoffleash.com.
Congratulations to Manhattan's Riverside Park! After polling dog-park visitors all over the country, PETA honored Riverside by naming it one of the top ten dog parks in the nation.
Animal Care & Control is building a community of volunteers in Manhattan, Staten Island, and Brooklyn. While many private shelters and rescue groups have a strong, loyal coalition of people willing to help, the city's biggest shelters run by the AC&C are lagging behind. If you're interested in learning more, attend one of the regular orientations. Children and seniors are welcome.
