Dear urbanhounders,
Is pet health insurance worth the money? That was just one question we set out to answer when we began our research. Our reporting team, led by Urbanhound's Chicago editor Aaron Baar, studied all the major plans, comparing costs, coverage, exemptions, and, yes, the fine print. The result: Urbanhound's all-new (and must-read) Pet Health Insurance Guide.
As you probably know first-hand, the cost of veterinary care has exploded. That's got more and more of us thinking about getting pet insurance. But it isn't easy making sense of all the options.
How much will you actually be reimbursed? What's with all those hidden surcharges? If your dog has a chronic condition, will he lose coverage? What does it mean that your policy "re-sets" every year? Which breeds are excluded from which plans?
Our Pet Health Insurance Guide covers everything the insurance companies don't tell you, or don't want you to know.
Here's to the good health of all of our hounds.
Yours,
Nadia Zonis

| Help a Hound -- Volunteering |
 |
It's the time of year when many of us are feeling the urge to do good. If you've been thinking about volunteering to help hounds, there are many shelters and rescue groups around town that could use a hand. We list a few here; for a more complete list, visit our adopt a hound guide.
Animal Care & Control of New York City The network of city shelters includes facilities in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Staten Island. All have active volunteer programs. They especially welcome kids and seniors. Call 212-788-4000 or email Volunteer@nycacc.org.
Animal Haven Is about to open a brand-new shelter in Soho. They'll need to bring a team of volunteers on board to help out there. Click on the "Volunteers Needed" link on the website or call 718-886-3683 for more information.
Brooklyn Animal Foster Network would love your help, especially if you have a car. They always need drivers to help transport animals to adoption events.
The Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition (BARC) is always looking for volunteer grant writers, photographers, event promoters, and dog walkers. (If you happen to be a cat person, their many cats could use some companionship.) To get involved stop by BQE Pet Supply at 253 Wythe Ave. in Williamsburg, and fill out a volunteer application. The phone number is 718-486-7489.
The Good Dog Foundation If you'd like to volunteer with your hound, GDF will provide therapy dog training, certification, and placement.
