IN THIS ISSUE:
• Hound health • How to license your dog + other tips • Events around town • Hound news
Dear urbanhounders,

We cover a lot of ground at urbanhound. We review weekend getaways, pet shops, and dog parks. We offer training and legal tips. We've got a Breed Finder and a canine's guide to airline travel.

Still, what we're most proud of is our Hound Health section. It offers advice on alternative treatments, pet insurance plans, and low-cost veterinary care.

Above all, what makes Hound Health the resource on veterinary health is our rich (and ever-growing) library of essential Q&As: What can I do about my dog's terrible breath? Do old dogs get senile? Is heartworm treatment harmful? My dog has leukemia: what's the prognosis? Do dogs need flea prevention in the winter? Do glucosamine/chondroitin sulfate supplements help dogs with hip dysplasia?

Answering all these questions (and far more) is our own Betsy Brevitz, D.V.M., a graduate of Tufts' School of Veterinary Medicine and author of the critically acclaimed Hound Health Handbook: The Definitive Guide to Keeping Your Dog Happy, Healthy & Active.

On that note: Here's to healthy dogs (and to a very happy 2007!).

Yours,
Nadia Zonis

Hound Tips
»  Here's an excellent New Year's resolution: Get a license for your dog. It's easy, cheap ($8.50, plus a $3 surcharge if your dog isn't fixed), and helps dog advocacy groups like FIDO and Central Park PAWS fight for the rights of hounds and their people. For information on how to get a license, plus a guide to the other six dog laws you'll want to follow this year, visit Urbanhound's Hound Law section.

»  Is your dog "difficult" in the elevator? Urbanhound trainer Andrea Arden has the techniques to make her sit quietly all the way to the ground floor.

»  Searching for a groomer, a trainer, a pet taxi? You'll find them all in our Services and Supplies Directory.

Emergency Planning for Pets The New York City Office of Emergency Management has created an Animal Planning Task Force to develop plans to save pets in a Katrina-style disaster. Their first step has been to release a brochure advising pet owners on preparedness. Request one by calling 311, or download it from their site.

New Bay Ridge Dog Run Group If you live in Bay Ridge and frequent the Owl's Head Dog Run, check out Bay Ridge Barks. The group's website offers forums, photos, and information on the park and the people and hounds who use it.

Call for Breed Ban The debate over so-called breed-specific legislation has finally arrived in New York City. City Council Member Peter Vallone, Jr. (D-Queens) has introduced Resolution 156 calling for a repeal of the New York State law that prohibits breed-specific legislation. If this resolution were to pass, some breeds, in theory, could be banned in New York City. Many advocacy groups oppose legislation that applies only to certain breeds, arguing that all irresponsible owners of dangerous dogs should be penalized, regardless of the dog's breed. For updates on Resolution 156, check in with the League of Humane Voters.

Pill for Chubby Pups Many would lie, cheat, or steal to get a pill that would make them lose 20 percent of their body weight. Well, pharmaceutical giant Pfizer has answered the call, but for dogs, not people. Their new drug, Slentrol (we're not making this up), reduces appetite and absorption of fat. In clinical trials, dogs lost about three percent of their weight a month, ultimately losing 18 to 22 percent without changing their diets. The FDA says possible side effects include "abdominal distention, abdominal pain, diarrhea, flatulence, headache, nausea and vomiting." Unfortunately, the drug causes liver damage in humans.
