Dear Urbanhounders,

Your dog doesn't drive. He doesn't flush the toilet or leave lights on around the house. And yet, he's got a carbon paw print. Here are some steps you can take to make sure your dog is living green:

Use biodegradable poop bags.

Select chew toys made from what's left over when other playthings are manufactured, and that can be recycled when your hound is tired of them.

Choose collars and leashes made from hemp. (A plant that grows without pesticides and replenishes the soil.)

Tuck your hound into a bed filled with soft and fluffy material created from recycled plastic bottles.

Convince your super to use Safe Paw to melt the ice on the sidewalk outside your building. It won't sting paws, and it pollutes far less than rock salt.

Wash your dog with soap made without harsh chemicals. Those from Cain and Able are tested on humans!

Buy pet food locally -- at Whiskers, for example -- they were eco long before it was hip. You'll be reducing carbon emissions and supporting a local business

With best green and clean wishes to you and your hounds,

Nadia Zonis

Lobbying for new downtown dog runs. If you live in the West Village and you'd like to see a dog run in Seravalli Park, check out DogRunOnHudson.com. For those on the Lower East Side, there's a group working on getting a dog run in Sara D. Roosevelt Park. They encourage you to attend the CB 3 meeting tonight, November 8, at 6:00 PM at University Settlement, Speyer Hall, 184 Eldridge St. btwn. Rivington and Delancey. More info here.

Now really. Shouldn't there be place for your dog's profile on Facebook? There is! Check out the Dogbook application.

Watch out for hound hustlers. Word is out about scammers targeting hounds and their people -- online and in the real world. Last month a Williamsburg couple paid $2500 ransom for their Boston Terrier to someone they think took her when she was tied up outside a laudromat. And the notorious Nigerian scammers, perhaps having exhausted the pool of people susceptible to other kinds of fraud, have invented a puppy scam. How low can they sink!

Funds needed to care for sick and injured strays. Animal Care and Control has sent out a plea for donations to its depleted STAR (Special Treatment and Recovery) program that funds medical care for animals in the shelter who might otherwise be euthanized. To donate to the STAR fund, send a check made payable to: Liz Keller, STAR Fund, NYC Animal Care & Control, 11 Park Pl., Ste. 805, NY, NY 10007, or give online at www.nycacc.org.
