IN THIS ISSUE:
• Tell us about your neighborhood
• Bowling for Greyhounds + other events
• Hound News
Dear Urbanhounders,

Having a dog makes you more attuned to your environment. That is not always a good thing (for example, I'm altogether too attuned to the Chinese food that's been rotting just outside my building for weeks), but most of the time, I love the sense of connectedness that comes with being a dog person.

Dog people know what's going on. We suss out that perfect neighborhood spot that let us relax on a bench with our coffee and our dogs. We know which stores are most welcoming. We're quick to uncover the local local watering hole that looks the other way when you, and your dog, come in for a drink.

So here's what we're thinking: we need to harness this wealth of inside information and we need your help! In the name of New York's great dog community, please share your top three tips by adding them to this new thread on Hound Talk.

And stay posted. In the next issue of NewsHound, we'll highlight the best of the best.

With best early spring wishes to you and your hounds,

Nadia Zonis

Editor, urbanhound New York

Hound Tips
» If you're thinking of getting a(nother) dog, you'll want to do everything possible to assure that the pup you take home is healthy. Urbanhound.com's vast The Vet Is In library includes an article explaining what can be done to avoid hip dysplasia in dogs (plus what exactly a breeder's "OFA certification" means). Another article describes what genetic defects are revealed by a CERF report .

»  There's nothing more annoying than a dog who barks barks barks for no good reason. Besides, if you live in an apartment, a dog who barks needlessly could threaten you with eviction. On urbanhound.com's The Trainer Is In pages, Andrea Arden offers advice on how to hush your hound, with answers to such questions as: How do I stop my dog from barking when she's alone?; What's the best way to prevent dogs from barking at every noise?; and Can I teach my dog to shush on command?.

Partisan dog biscuits. We're a little unclear on whether you should proudly order the treats that symbolize your party, or get those of the opposing party and feed them to your hound with vindictive glee. Either way, these goodies (manufactured, appropriately enough, by the Capitol Dog Bakery, with a portion of proceeds going to the Washington Humane Society) seem particularly apropos for primary season.

Paws for Poetry Contest. In honor of poetry month, The Humane Society of New York and Meet me at the Corner.org are sponsoring a poetry contest for kids ages 7 to 12. The subject? A pet or animal they love. Details and how to enter here.

Pets now welcome at Peter Cooper Village and Stuyvesant Town. With pet friendly apartments few and far between in NYC, it's good news that this East Village complex of 110 buildings, 11,250 apartments, and over 25,000 residents will now allow cats and dogs.

DIY guide to greening your hound. The brand new book Eco Dog: Healthy Living for Your Pet by Corbett Marshall and Jim Deskevich provides step-by-step directions on making things -- from meatloaf to shampoo to natural odor absorbers to a recycled denim pet bed -- to help reduce your hound's carbon paw print.

Free Spay-Neuter Surgery + Vaccinations. If you are on public assistance and live in the five boroughs, the ASPCA will spay or neuter and vaccinate your pet for free. Details here.

What's On. Saturday evenings on Animal Planet are particularly hound-focused this month. The new reality show Groomer Has It premieres on Saturday April 12 at 9 PM. Twelve groomers will compete for a $50,000 prize and a mobile grooming salon. At 10, Showdogs Moms and Dads follows five families who sacrifice everything to make their dogs champions. On Mondays, Petfinder, in which hosts Jarod Miller and Dina Zaphiris help match families with shelter animals, continues. On Saturday April 5 at 8, the station airs the Animal Planet Dog Championships from Portland, OR. On Saturday the 12th from 8 to 9 PM, It's Me or the Fat Dog Update Special checks in with trainer Victoria Stilwell and the three generously-proportioned dogs she created a new regimen for seven months ago.
